# FANUC CNC controls

> PLCGateway monitors FANUC CNC machines over FOCAS Ethernet, without Fwlib or a Windows PC, and turns their data into OEE, alarms and dashboards.

PLCGateway reads FANUC CNC controls with its own implementation of the FOCAS Ethernet protocol: machine status, positions, spindle speed and load, feed, alarms, programs, macro variables, parameters, diagnosis and PMC signals.

Because no FANUC library is needed, PLCGateway runs on Windows, Linux or a small ARM device at the machine. With the production model it calculates availability, cycle counts and OEE for every CNC, and the OPC UA server shares the data with MES.

## Families and models

| Family | Models (examples) | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Series 0i | 0i-D, 0i-F, 0i-F Plus — Embedded Ethernet with FOCAS enabled (port 8193). | [FANUC FOCAS](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/fanuc-focas.md) |
| Series 30i / 31i / 32i / 35i | 30i-B, 31i-B, 31i-B5, 32i-B, 35i-B, -B Plus — Embedded Ethernet with FOCAS; controls with the FANUC OPC UA server option can also use the OPC UA client. | [FANUC FOCAS](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/fanuc-focas.md), [OPC UA client](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/opc-ua.md) |
| Series 16i / 18i / 21i | 16i-B, 18i-B, 21i-B (Ethernet board) — With an Ethernet board that supports FOCAS. | [FANUC FOCAS](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/fanuc-focas.md) |

## Notes for commissioning

- Enable FOCAS on the embedded Ethernet port in the control's Ethernet settings (port 8193).
- Use status.run and the program number for availability and cycle detection in the production model.
- Only macro variables are writable; everything else is read only.
- Let an AI assistant create a standard tag set for each CNC over MCP.

## Questions and answers

### Does PLCGateway need FANUC Fwlib32?

No, the FOCAS Ethernet protocol is implemented natively, so it runs without Windows and without FANUC DLLs.

### Can it read FANUC robots?

The FOCAS driver is for CNC controls. Robot controllers can be connected through OPC UA or Modbus TCP if the robot offers them.

### How many machines can one installation monitor?

Each machine is a device with its own connection; a single PLCGateway typically monitors a whole shop floor.
