# Protection relays, IEDs and RTUs

> PLCGateway brings switchgear, protection and energy data into SCADA and energy management with IEC 61850, DNP3 and IEC 60870-5-104.

Industrial substations and utilities use protection relays, bay controllers and RTUs with standard telecontrol protocols. PLCGateway connects them with IEC 61850 MMS, DNP3 or IEC 60870-5-104, depending on what the device offers.

Breaker positions, measurements, energy counters and alarms are shown on screens with the electrical symbols, logged for energy management and ISO 50001, and combined with production data in the same reports.

## Families and models

| Family | Models (examples) | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Siemens SIPROTEC · SICAM | SIPROTEC 5, SIPROTEC 4, SICAM A8000 — IEC 61850, DNP3 or IEC 104, depending on the device and its communication module. | [IEC 61850 MMS](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/iec-61850.md), [DNP3 (IEEE 1815)](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/dnp3.md), [IEC 60870-5-104](https://plcgateway.com/protocols/iec-60870-5-104.md) |

## Notes for commissioning

- Clarify with the operator which protocol and point list may be used.
- IEC 61850: browse the data model instead of searching the ICD file.
- Use separate networks or VPNs for protection devices.
- Draw breakers, transformers and feeders with the electrical symbols of the screen designer.

## Questions and answers

### Which protocol should I use?

IEC 61850 where the device offers it and its data model is wanted; DNP3 or IEC 104 where the utility or the RTU uses it.

### Can operators switch breakers?

Yes, with controls over IEC 61850, DNP3 or IEC 104, protected by user roles, confirmations and PIN on the operator screens.

### Is PLCGateway a replacement for a utility SCADA?

It is aimed at industrial sites and buildings: substation data together with production and energy, not the control centre of a grid operator.
