# Allen-Bradley EtherNet/IP (CIP)

> Connect Rockwell Logix controllers with symbolic tag names, browse the controller and program tags and use them in OPC UA, SCADA and AI workflows.

PLCGateway talks CIP over EtherNet/IP (port 44818) to Logix controllers and reads tags by their names: controller-scoped and program-scoped tags, array elements, members of user-defined types and strings. Many tags are packed into one Multiple Service Packet so that large tag lists stay fast.

The tag browser lists the controller and program tags directly from the CPU, so tags are selected instead of typed. For ControlLogix the route path through the backplane or bridges is configurable; Micro800 controllers are reached directly.

## What PLCGateway reads and writes

- Controller-scoped and program-scoped tags
- Array elements, also multi-dimensional
- Members of user-defined types (UDT)
- BOOL, SINT, INT, DINT, LINT, REAL, LREAL and STRING
- Bits of integer tags, written with read-modify-write
- Tag list browsing from the controller

## Address examples

| Address | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `Motor_Speed` | Controller-scoped tag |
| `Program:MainProgram.Counter` | Program-scoped tag |
| `Recipe[4] · Matrix[1,2]` | Array elements |
| `Line1.Pump.Running` | UDT member |
| `StatusWord.3` | Bit of an integer tag |
| `OperatorMsg` | STRING |

## Connect in a few steps

1. Add an EtherNet/IP device with the IP address of the controller or its Ethernet module.
2. For ControlLogix enter the route path (for example 1,0 for the CPU in slot 0); Micro800 needs none.
3. Open the tag browser, select controller or program tags and add them in one step.
4. Use the tags on screens, in history and alarms, or publish them over OPC UA and MQTT.

## Questions and answers

### Do I need RSLinx or FactoryTalk Linx?

No. PLCGateway communicates with the controller directly; no Rockwell software or licence is needed on the PC.

### Are PLC-5, SLC 500 and MicroLogix supported?

These older controllers use PCCC instead of symbolic tags. On Windows they can be connected through RSLinx Classic with the OPC DA client of PLCGateway.

### Can I write tags?

Yes, atomic tags, array elements, UDT members and single bits of integers can be written from screens, OPC UA, MQTT or the REST API, with the user rights of PLCGateway.
