Omron FINS

Read and write Omron controllers over Ethernet with FINS/UDP or FINS/TCP and bring their memory areas into OPC UA, SCADA and history.

  • fins_udp
  • fins_tcp

FINS is the native communication of Omron controllers. PLCGateway connects over FINS/UDP or FINS/TCP on port 9600; with FINS/TCP the node addresses are negotiated automatically, and the controller model is read on connect.

Consecutive words are merged into one Memory Area Read request, 32 and 64-bit values follow the Omron word order, and BCD values can be decoded per tag. On NJ and NX controllers, variables that are mapped to a memory area with an AT address are reachable through FINS.

What PLCGateway reads and writes

  • DM area words and bits
  • CIO, work (W), holding (H) and auxiliary (A) areas
  • Timer and counter present values and completion flags
  • Extended memory banks (EM)
  • BCD and string values per tag
  • Writing of words and bits

Controllers and devices

Equipment that is typically connected with this driver.

Connect in a few steps

  1. Give the controller (or its Ethernet unit) an IP address and FINS node number in CX-Programmer or Sysmac Studio.

  2. Add a FINS/UDP or FINS/TCP device with the IP address; for NJ/NX map the variables to read to a memory area with an AT address.

  3. Create the tags or import them from CSV and test the connection.

  4. Use the values in screens, alarms, reports or share them over OPC UA.

Questions and answers

UDP or TCP?

Both work. FINS/TCP negotiates the node numbers automatically and is easier through routers; FINS/UDP is lighter and is supported by every Omron Ethernet unit.

Can I read NJ/NX variables by name?

With FINS, NJ and NX variables are reached through their memory address (AT specification). For symbolic access, controllers with an OPC UA server can be connected through the OPC UA client.

Are 32-bit values in the right order?

PLCGateway uses the Omron layout (low word first) by default; it can be switched per device if a program stores values differently.
