IEC 61850 MMS

Connect protection relays, bay controllers and merging units with IEC 61850 MMS and use their measurements and switch positions in SCADA and energy management.

  • iec61850

IEC 61850 describes substation devices with a standard data model of logical devices, logical nodes and data objects. PLCGateway's client connects to an IED over MMS (IEC 61850-8-1, port 102), reads data attributes by their MMS names in batches and writes set points and control structures.

The data model of the device can be browsed, so measurements like MMXU total power or the position of a circuit breaker XCBR are found without the ICD file at hand. Quality and time stamps of every value are available as their own tags.

What PLCGateway reads and writes

  • Measurements (MX), status (ST), set points (SP, SE, SG) and configuration (CF)
  • Quality bits and UTC time stamps
  • Structures as JSON text
  • Browsing of logical devices and all variables
  • Control with direct operate and select-before-operate (SBOw)
  • Writing of set points

Controllers and devices

Equipment that is typically connected with this driver.

Connect in a few steps

  1. Note the IP address of the IED and, if needed, the TSAP values from its ICD or CID file.

  2. Add an IEC 61850 device and open the address browser.

  3. Select the measurements and status values and add them as tags.

  4. Show feeders and breakers on screens with the electrical symbols and log them for energy management.

Questions and answers

Are reports and GOOSE supported?

Values are read cyclically over MMS; report control blocks and GOOSE are not subscribed.

Can I operate breakers?

Yes, controls are written as control structures with direct operate or select-before-operate, with PLCGateway's user rights and confirmations on screens.

Which devices work?

IEDs that implement the IEC 61850 MMS server, for example relays of the SIPROTEC, Relion, MiCOM / Easergy, SEL and Multilin families, depending on the model and ordered options.
